Mourning the Loss of Former Senator Jim Bunning

The YMCA Retirement Fund will always remember and appreciate the role former U.S. Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) played in securing our church pension status.

Mr. Bunning died on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the age of 85. He was also a Baseball Hall of Famer.

In February 2002, the IRS challenged the Fund’s tax status, and it became necessary to appeal directly to Congress for protection. Mr. Bunning, along with other senators and representatives, was integral in helping the Fund clarify its tax status and protect important aspects of plan functionality. Mr. Bunning helped champion the Church Plan bill protecting the Fund. The bill passed both the House and Senate by unanimous consent in 2004. On December 21, 2004, President George W. Bush signed U.S. Public Law 108-476.

This law clarified the Fund’s tax status and classified the plans provided by the YMCA Retirement Fund as church plans. This milestone provided permanent protection of our church plan status.
