In addition to individual asset class and composite benchmarks, the Fund continuously compares its investment strategies and returns against similar investment vehicles and the market in general.
This information shows how your Fund stacks up with other investments. Because of the structure of the Retirement Fund, the important difference is that your account balances are NOT subject to fluctuations so that when you retire, your annuity is based on your account balance at that time.

In response to the combination of an increasing average life expectancy and lifetime annuity benefits, pension funds typically allocate greater assets to equity investments to seek their historically higher returns. Referred to as asset allocation we compare our mix of investments to that of other pension funds. See Chart.

We also compare the Funds performance against market returns in the form of general indices for purposes of understanding relative outcomes. In other words, what is the Fund's performance in the context of the general investment environment. See Chart.

Comparing Fund Investment Returns to Large Mutual Funds
If YMCA employees did not have access to participation in the Fund, a retirement investment alternative would be balanced mutual funds. We monitor performance of those funds with over $1B in assets that have an asset allocation policy of 60% stocks and 40% bonds similar to the Fund. See Chart.
